It's Just 13 Miles, Right?


  • Well, actually, to be precise, it's 13.1 miles. And I suppose it's best to be precise because if you don't complete that last tenth of a mile, you probably died trying to run your first half-marathon and that, as the Brits say, would be poor form. So, it's 13.1 miles. On October 11, 2008. In Hartford, CT. I am 51 years old and decided (somewhat abruptly) to run the ING Half-Marathon. Why? Well, there are several reasons. First, who wouldn't want to be in Connecticut in October? Can you spell f-o-l-i-a-g-e? And since I live out on the prairie in eastern Kansas, I'll have to travel SOMEWHERE to get to a city large enough to host a half-marathon, so heck, it might as well be Hartford. But then, who knows all of the cosmic reasons why one chooses to run long distances? It's something I have done (off and on) my whole life. Some people say it takes a certain mental discipline to run long distance. That may be. But I think it also takes a certain kind of insanity. The kind that is eased by long stretches of rhythmic silence. Okay. Here's the real reason: My ex-husband is getting married on October 11th, which is fine, but he managed to get our 25-year marriage annulled so he could do this up proper in the Church ... which was not quite so fine with me. So, rather than sit here and seethe, I decided to go for a long run. Just 13 miles. On October 11. In Hartford, CT. Along the way, I hope to lose 25 lbs. My goal is to step up to the starting line with the best fitness and conditioning level of my life, run 13.1 good miles, and have FUN. Cross the finish line with enough fuel left in the tank to enjoy the post-race party. Or, barring that, to at least live to tell about it
